*gln: ARCHIVING ABANDONED CACHE

Greetings moose johnson,

Looks like our timing is off, and It’s time to say goodbye to this cache.

Since I haven't seen any maintenance here in a while, I am going to assume that your priorities have changed, and you’ve gone in a different direction.

Archiving due to lack of maintenance is permanent.
CACHE ARCHIVAL IS PERMANENT.

Let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Thanks a MILLION for all you have done, Glenn

Geocache Description:

This cache will give you a bit of history on a device that has probably saved many lives. The device in question is the Osborne Fire Finder.  The Osborne Fire Finder is a type of alidade used by fire lookouts in order to find a directional bearing to smoke in order to alert fire crews to a wildfire. The forerunner to the device was invented arond 1840 by Sir Francis Ronalds to help combat fires in London England. In 1915 a William Osborne invented the new and improved Osborne Fire Finder, by adding a sight and map to the device. There is a nice example of a Fire Finder in the small building just north of the cache location.

The cache is a duck taped plastic bison tube.    Thanks to the Runge Nature Center staff for allowing caches to be placed.

There was a large tin container at the location. It is not the cache but part of a treasure hunt around the Runge area.
