Geocache Description:


This cache is part of the Linn Creek Trail: Marshalltown History series. Follow the bike trail to a series of caches highlighting prominent figures in Marshalltown history. Each cache will require you to leave the trail and search for a hidden cache. The caches in this series vary in difficulty and terrain.

Frank Jack “Blackjack” Fletcher (1885 - 1973)

Fletcher was born in Marshalltown on April 29, 1885.  Appointed to the US Naval Academy from his native state in 1902, Frank graduated from Annapolis on February 12, 1906.  He served in the Navy during both WWI and WWII.

As lieutenant, Fletcher was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Veracruz, saving over 300 refugees.  As Admiral during WWII, Fletcher was the operational commander of pivotal Battles of Coral Sea and Midway.  Among many awards, Fletcher received the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Navy Cross, and the Distinguished Service Medal.  Admiral Fletcher achieved the highest rank of any recipient of the Medal of Honor from the State of Iowa.  He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
