The views on the drive up to the monument are spectacular. You will be able to see several ridges, like “Kong”, in full length wise view. Although the grounds to Spalding monument are well maintained, the monument itself is in disrepair, and there are no longer any signs of who the monument honors.
Spalding Monument - Built in honor of an old sugar mill plantation owner, Colnel Zephaniah Spalding, the monument commemorates a Cival War veteran. It was said because of his service record during that war, he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson to serve as American Consul to the Kingdom of Hawai’i in Honolulu. It is also said that he was serving as a “secret” agent to guage the impact of a reciprocity agreements on future relations with U.S. and Hawai’i. He later entered into a sugar venture on Maui, and then purchased land in Kapa’a Kauai, and started a sugar plantation and mill with other business partners and his father-in-law.
If you are an early riser, this is a nice spot for a sun rise. Also, with these awesome views.. a nice place to sit on the grass and have a picnic lunch.
