Vilafamés es su peculiar color rojizo dado que está edificada sobre la propia roca roja, denominada en la región como rodeno.
This Earthcache leads to Vilafamés, town in the province of Castellon declared as one of "The most beautiful villages in Spain". What makes Vilafamés unique and different is its peculiar reddish colour since it is built on the red rock, known in the region as rodeno (i.e. russet sandstone).
¿Qué es el rodeno?
El rodeno es el nombre que en esta región se da a la piedra arenisca roja.
Son rocas sedimentarias que se formaron en el Triásico Inferior, hace 250 millones de años cuando en esta zona reinaba un clima caluroso, seco y con lluvias torrenciales. Los ríos eran enormes cursos de agua que erosionaron intensamente los macizos paleozoicos y transportaron por unos amplios valles gran cantidad de gravas, arenas y arcillas que depositaron al inicio de las llanuras aluviales. Estas arenas se han ido compactando lentamente hasta cementarse, dando origen a lo que hoy se conoce como rodeno o
areniscas del Buntsandstein, nombre con el que los geólogos alemanes bautizaron a estas rocas por su intenso color rojizo debido los minerales de hierro y magnesio presentes en ellas.
What is the rodeno?
Rodeno is the name given to the red sandstone in this region.
They are sedimentary rocks that were formed in the lower Triassic, 250 million years ago when this area had a hot, dry climate with torrential rains. The rivers were huge and eroded the Paleozoic massifs intensively; transported lots of gravels, sands and clays through their large valleys and were finally deposited at the beginning of the alluvial plains. Slowly these sands have been being compacted until cemented and thus originating what is today known as rodeno or sandstones of the Buntsandstein, the name given by German geologists to these rocks by their intense reddish colour because of iron and magnesium ores in them.
La forma peculiar de los rodenos se debe a factores tectónicos que han marcado sus líneas de debilildad ayudados por fenómenos erosivos externos como el viento, el agua y la climatología, que han colaborado en la formación de afloraciones de gran belleza y vistosidad. Es común encontrar varias rocas apiladas creando curiosas formaciones a las que la tradición popular ha dado entidad propia y dotado de nombres propios.
The peculiar shape of the rodenos is due to tectonic factors that have marked their lines of weakness aided by external erosive factors such as wind, water and all climatic conditions, which have helped in the formation of spectacular outcrops of great beauty. It is common to find several stacked rocks creating curious formations to which popular tradition has given entity to themselves and endowed with proper names.
In Vilafamés we find one of the most visited rocks of rodeno: the Roca Grossa. It is a huge rock, black and red, which is suspended in the hillside sloping field in an apparent unstable equilibrium, defying the law of the gravity.
Se trata de una gran mole de rodeno. Tiene un volumen de 832 metros cúbicos y un peso aproximado de 2.163.200 Kg. Presenta una inclinación de 34º respecto a la horizontal. Su formación se produjo hace unos 222 millones de años (principios de la era Secundaria) aunque su configuración actual es de hace unos 30 millones de años. Sus impresionantes características físicas y geológicas se exponen en un mosaico al lado de la roca:
It is a great mass of rodeno. Its volume is 832 cubic meters and weights approximately 2,163,200 kg. It presents an inclination of 34 ° from the horizontal. Its origin occurred some 222 million years ago (early in the Secondary era) although its current configuration dates from about 30 million years ago. Cuenta la leyenda que los vecinos quisieron arrastrar la roca al llano por temor de morir aplastados. Ataron una gran cuerda y tiraron de ella, ésta se rompió sin lograr mover la roca. Al romperse la cuerda, cayeron todos al suelo y se ensuciaron su trasero de color rojo. Desde entonces los habitantes de Vilafamés son conocidos como “culrojos”.
Legend has it that residents wanted to drag the rock to the plain for fear of dying crushed by it. A large rope was tied and they pulled it, but the rope broke without being able to move the rock. As the rope broke, people fell to the ground and their bottoms were fouled with the rodeno. Since then, the inhabitants of Vilafamés are known as “culrojos” (that is: “redbutts”).
