Genius. The word is thrown around with utter disregard for consequence. Sure, for Einstein, it certainly fit. But for Bill Belichick? Stephen Hawking? Yes. Carrot Top? Only in certain circles.
In fact, it seems that each occupation or subspecialty has its own definition of Genius. Shaun White has been termed a Genius not only in snowboarding, but also in Branding (at least Ad Week thinks so). And there might be something to it, as Lil Wayne has even rapped about him. Which you likely know was in a song entitled Bill Gates, which brings us to a whole different level of Genius, but that might need to be the topic of another puzzle. (FYI – if you’re interested, you can find the lyrics for the song on genius.com.)
As was initially stated, today Genius is bordering ubiquity. At least the word is. I can’t guarantee that the thought process is. In fact, everyone pictured below has been called genius in at least one field.
(Except maybe that kid. He might just be there because it’s his birthday.)
