Il Castellaccio è un'importante costruzione che domina l'abitato di Filettole, frazione di Vecchiano. Fu edificato nel XII secolo come monastero fortificato dedicato a Santa Viviana. Per la sua posizione al confine tra le terre pisane e lucchesi fu più volte coinvolto nelle battaglie tra queste due città, senza mai capitolare. Nel XIV secolo divenne un palazzo munito di torri, di proprietà della famiglia Gambacorti, che lo abbandonò nel 1406 quando Pisa fu conquistata da Firenze. Da quell'epoca il complesso ha preso il nome di Castellaccio. Il palazzo divenne successivamente proprietà degli Arcivescovi di Pisa, e subì svariati restauri, mantenendo comunque gran parte delle linee originali. Attualmente il Castellaccio è proprietà privata e non è visitabile.
La cache è un contenitore di dimensioni micro nascosto nel muro di cinta del Castellaccio. Si raccomanda la massima discrezione visto che il palazzo è abitato. Buona ricerca!
The Castellaccio is an important building that dominates the village of Filettole, a hamlet of Vecchiano. It was built in the twelfth century as a fortified monastery dedicated to Saint Viviana. Because of its position on the border between Pisa and Lucca it was repeatedly involved in the battles between these two cities, without ever capitulating. In the fourteenth century it became a palace with towers, owned by the Gambacorti family, who abandoned it in 1406 when Pisa was conquered by Florence. Since that time the complex has taken the name of Castellaccio (bad castle). The palace later became the property of the Archbishops of Pisa, and underwent several restorations, still maintaining most of the original lines. Currently the Castellaccio is private property and cannot be visited.
The cache is a micro-sized container hidden in the wall of the Castellaccio. Maximum discretion is recommended as the building is inhabited. Happy geocaching!
