This cache is placed and maintained by Martin 5.

This letterbox hybrid contains:
- A log book and ink pen.
- A rubber stamp and ink pad.
PLEASE LEAVE THEM IN THE CACHE!!

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates. Rather, they are the coordinates for the Idaho/Washington state line. To the east of these coordinates is the Milwaukee Road Trestle which is now part of the North Idaho Centennial Trail where it crosses over the Spokane River at the Washington, Idaho State Line.

To find the cache, go east down the trail approximately 80 feet from the posted coordinates to a small bush on the right. Look for a rocky trail that goes southwest down the hill. Go down the rocky trail to the fence. Once at the fence, look under the tree that is to your east. Don't forget to stamp your passport!

There once stood two trestle crossings over the Spokane River here. One belonging to the Milwaukee Road railroad and the other the Inland Empire Electric railroad, which was purchased by the Great Northern railroad in 1909. Joint use of the tracks between Spokane Bridge, Washington, and Gibbs, Idaho, by the Milwaukee Road and Great Northern railroads began in 1945 and resulted in the Inland Empire Electric railroad trestle at Spokane Bridge becoming redundant. This trestle was eventually removed; however, the Milwaukee Road trestle remains today as part of the North Idaho Centennial Trail.

When old railway lines are no longer being used to transport goods, they are often converted into the perfect bike paths. Long, slowly turning, and generally flat, Idaho’s old railway lines are now some of the best bike paths in the country. The Centennial Trail snakes along almost 100 miles, with the Idaho portion featuring 23 miles of paved trail that runs from the waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene, to the prairie grass of Post Falls, and then into Washington.

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit STAR Challenge and get started today.
