Red Hot in Hill Top
This cache has a theme: "Bush Fire Brigade". So spare a thought for these guys next time you see smoke. As the saying goes - "where there's smoke there's...."
This is a shout out to the men and women volunteers of the Hilltop Fire Station.
Hilltop- Cat 1(BA) & Cat 7
History:
In the 1930s a branch of the Rural Fire Brigade was formed in Hilltop. Led by Bert Chalker, initially it had "only three essential pieces of equipment: a beater (a piece of leather on the end of a stick), a rake and a knapsack spray".
Chalker took as many as possible in his own truck and others took their own vehicles to reach a fire. Later water was carried in 44 gallon drums on the trays of privately owned trucks and hand pumps were used.
About:
The first Fire Station in Hilltop was built in 1946.
