Geocache Description:

An early photograph of Ipoh Train Station

The Ipoh Railway Station is one of the most iconic buildings of Ipoh. Situated at the edge of the old town, it is walking distance to many of the reasonably-priced accommodation options, famous food outlets and tourist destinations in the historic Old Town area. It is surrounded by other well-maintained and impressive colonial-style buildings and is a must-see for visitors to Ipoh.

The first station on the site was a wooden building constructed in 1894. The current Ipoh train station was started in 1914 and completed in 1917, the progress of building having been slowed by materials shortages and escalating labour costs caused by the war. The building remains very much the same as when it was originally built, the upstairs being a hotel which originally had 17 rooms (later increased to 21 rooms), and the downstairs housing railway offices as well as the station. The building is more western in style than the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, in late Edwardian baroque style, but also has elements of Indo-saracenic architecture, such as the decorative "chhatris" (domes).

The station is a busy station and many trains pass through here each day, including regular electric train services to Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth (Penang).

In front of the station is the pretty Ipoh Station Square, renovated between 2011 and 2013. The square is home to the famous "Ipoh Tree" (this one planted in 1980), the Ipoh cenotaph, small gardens, and fountains that are rather attractive at night.

This cache is the third to be placed at the Ipoh station. It has been moved again, same hide, different pipe. We hope it will be safe from the prying eyes of waiting taxi drivers, but please practice stealth as it is beside the driveway.

This cache may be included in a walking tour of Ipoh Old Town, which passes many of the most interesting sights of the Old Town. A map ("Ipoh caching tour") with a suggested walking route is included with the pictures below. Cache #4 on the map is a multi and the stages are shown as 4-1, 4-2 etc, and the final stage, while not marked on the map, is easy to access while following this route. The caches of course may be done in any order (our suggested route starts at the railway station) and it is up to you to check the listings to ensure the caches marked on the tour are active when you visit.
