Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed to bring you to the Chinnor Windmill - which is within sight of where Janet grew up before travelling the world!

The windmill has moved during its lifetime which is a fairly unusual trait for such a structure. It's also a rare design with six feet (no, it's not the method it used to move across the road, it's the number of pillars it stands on). Janet's family has always helped to record the history of the village with Janet's dad giving regular talks at the historical society and some of the photos in the gallery are ones he has collected over the years.

The board in front of the windmill will give you information on its history starting in 1789, it's almost demise in 1967 and the restoration project at its present location which began in 1980. The mill is open on some Sundays during the year and the preservation society work on the project on alternate Sundays.

Chris Wallis, who was the millwright for the restoration, is the son of Sir Barnes Wallis the inventor of the Dambusters' famous Bouncing Bomb. Chris has worked on many local restoration projects including the only surviving flush lock capstan on the Thames. This is located on the SAS Institute estate just outside Marlow which, as fate would have it, now stands on the site of the RAF station where Sir Barnes had his wartime office. History harmonizes! You can see the capstan if you visit GC5A67H - The Grey Lady and walk a little further down the path to the edge of the Thames.

Enjoy the location, there is parking right next to the mill and plenty of space for geokids to run free! If you have time in the village we can recommend the Wee Bookshop Cafe which is for a great cause and great for a coffee, cake, browse through their huge selection of books! The younger kids will love the train which runs around the ceiling. The cafe is on Station Road (or for Geocachers that is ... N 51 42.169 W 000 54.677)
