1.02 #IFF - Polygon Wood Traditional Cache

Het Polygoon bos was tijdens WOI een belangrijk punt van de Ypres Salient (Ieperboog). Het bos werd verwoest tijdens de eerste slag om Ieper, maar bleef wel in handen van Britse troepen. Tijdens de 2e slag om Ieper, konden Duitse troepen het bos veroveren en twee jaar lang behouden. Tijdens de 3e slag om Ieper werden de bossen om Zonnebeke veroverd door Australische divisies. Op dat ogenbik werd ook Polygon Wood Cemetery aangelegd. Nadat de Nieuw-Zeelanders zich moesten terugtrekken uit het bos, kon de 9th Scottish Division het bos terugwinnen. Ter ere van deze overwinning werd aan de andere kant van het bos “Black Watch Memorial” geplaatst. Daar ligt tevens ook een geocache

La forêt de Polygone était un point important du saillant d'Ypres durant la Première Guerre mondiale. La forêt fut détruite lors de la première bataille d'Ypres, mais resta entre les mains des troupes britanniques. Au cours de la 2ème bataille d'Ypres, les troupes allemandes ont pu conquérir la forêt et la garder pendant deux ans. Au cours de la 3ème bataille d'Ypres, les forêts autour de Zonnebeke ont été conquises par les divisions australiennes. À ce moment, Polygon Wood Cemetery a également été aménagé. Après que les Néo-Zélandais aient dû se retirer de la forêt, la 9ème division écossaise a pu récupérer la forêt. Polygon Wood was an important point of the Ypres Salient during the WWI. The wood was destroyed during the first battle of Ypres, but remained in the hands of British troops. During the 2nd battle of Ypres, German troops could conquer the wood and keep it for two years. During the 3rd battle of Ypres, the woods around Zonnebeke were conquered by Australian divisions.
