STAR B01: Geocaching Junction Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache.Advance: Code Word: Firebox

Thanks RR for the nudge. We were toying with upping the difficulty to 5 since special equipment (like a back hoe) would be needed to dig through the rubble, not to mention a permit from the city and such but in the end we decided it is really time for this one to go.

The challenge is still open for a couple more weeks so if you are playing this is now a free spot on your passport - just fill it in with the code word Firebox.

Junction Example

What IS a railway junction? According to Jim Smith, a local historian, a railway junction is where two rail routes meet. Usually, one track runs north/south and the other runs east/west. It's simply an intersection with no building or terminal. Jim says Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Union Pacific all used junctions as long as Spokane has existed.

And speaking of the Northern Pacific, it is what made Spokane a city. Our little sawmill town incorporated in 1881, when NP reached the area. Within the next ten years, Spokane grew from 1,000 residents to a regional railroad hub, with lines radiating south to the agriculture of the Palouse and east to Idaho for mining and lumber (Schwantes, The Pacific Northwest).

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
