Geocache Description:

Sunset at Ambrosio Cave

18:15 - 18:45

Friday 9th March 2018

The event:  Just a quick event to excahnge some stories and trackables whilst in the area.  It has been timed with sunset at the Ambrosi Caves.  The caves close at 16:30 so will be outside the cave entrance, not inside.

The cave:  Located inside the Reserva Ecologica Varahicacos (Ecological Preserve), the Ambrosio Cave is an archaeological site which reflects Indian traditions of the region. Many pre-Columbian drawings were discovered there in 1961. The cave stretches over 300 meters with 5 interconnected galleries and contains a total of 72 aboriginal rupestrian rock drawings that are representative of the Taino culture.

They are thought to be more than 2000 years old, and is one of the largest collections of Indian pictographs in the Caribbean. The cave has also been used as a ceremonial site and as a refuge for escaped slaves during the colonial period.

This cave is also home to hundreds of little fruit-eating bats, these inoffensive and gentle creatures are fun to see flying around and hanging from the ceiling. This cave is a member of the BCI (Bat Conservation International, www.batcon.org) dedicated to the enduring protection of the world’s 1300+ species of bats and their habitats.
