This will be one of the western most geocaches in the world (West 176). Waitangi West is as far west as you can go on public land on the Chatham Islands. The property west of here is private farmland and needs permission to enter. However tourists are allowed to drive and park next to the gate that provides access to the beach. And what a stunning beach it is. A huge flat white sand beach with endangered plants and rare oystercatchers nesting here. A lovely piece of Chatham wilderness well worth the drive to see (and rewarded with a cache as well). Growing at the back of the beach is the best remaining habitat in New Zealand for the rare plant Atriplex billardierei. Pick a nice sunny day with a sea breeze to enjoy this special place.
