The city of Launceston operated a suburban tramway system between 1911 to 1952.
A fleet which grew to a peak of 29 trams ferried passengers along a number of routes to Trevallyn, Wentworth Street, Mowbray Heights, Carr Villa Cemetery, High Street, Basin Road and Kings Wharf.
As with other provincial tramways, Launceston's size scarcely justified the cost of construction and operation. Low patronage, combined with the age of equipment led to the phased replacement of trams by electric trolley buses. The last tram rolled back into the depot in December of 1952.
A few of the old trams have survived and have been restored...
# 29 operates a limited passenger service about the rails of Inveresk.
# 11 has been incorporated into the 'Tram Bar' of the Great Northern Hotel.
# 13 is on display in the Tasmanian Transport Museum.
