Alley cat may refer to:
Alley cat, a homeless domestic cat
feral cat, a cat that has been born to other ferals or from stray cats, and that are unaccustomed to human interaction
Domestic short-haired cat or "moggie" cat more generally, as distinct from a pedigreed cat
A 2012 report by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies estimated the number of owned cats in Canada at 10.2 million — which is roughly one cat for every three Canadians.
In addition, there were an estimated 600,000 cats in shelters in 2011 that did not get placed in homes, the federation said. And random estimates from communities across the country suggest there are tens of thousands of cats roaming in individual cities or towns.
The federation released a report titled “Cats in Canada” on Thursday December 28, 2018, noting that felines are the most common pet in the country, with nearly 37 per cent of households owning one. There are about 9.3 million owned cats in Canada.
About 73 per cent of animal shelters included in the study were running at capacity in 2017 — and there are twice as many cats being admitted than dogs. This poses a serious risk for felines, who the study explains tend to fall ill faster in overcrowded situations.
