About the film:
HARD EIGHT, made in 1996, tells the story of a professional gambler named Sydney (played by Philip Baker Hall) who takes a down and out loser named John (played by John C. Reilly) under his wing to teach him the ways of working the casinos. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson in his first feature film, this movie is all about the performances, and there are some good ones. Including nice turns by Samuel L. Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow.
