This cache is placed on the gounds of the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Danville, PA. The church officially began in 1845 with the establishment of St. Joseph's Church in Milton, PA, whose priest would regularly visit Danville and offer mass. Before 1845, traveling priests would offer mass to the Irish immigrants working on the Pennsylvania Canal, a state-wide effort begun in 1826 to facilitate commerce. That first St. Joseph's Church was built on the corner of Pine and Center Streets in Danville, just a few blocks from the current church. Construction on the current church began in 1867 and it was officially dedicated in 1869. The current pastor is Reverend James E. Lease, who graciously allowed this geocache to be placed.
The Geocache is also close to the Montgomery House, the home of General William Montgomery, one of the first European settlers of Danville. Montgomery built the home on his 180 acres of land in close proximity to a Delaware indian village located at the mouth of Mahoning Creek. Daniel Montgomery, William's son, established a trading post at the corner of Mill and East Market Streets, which bolstered settlements in the area. The area quickly became known as "Dan's Town", which eventually evolved into "Danville." For more information on Danville's history and the Montgomery House, I encourage you to visit the Montour County Historical Society.
Make sure to BYOP and replace the cache as you found it! Congrats to 4gslodysko for the FTF!
