川上杉は推定樹齢約2000年、樹高27ｍ、幹回り8.9ｍの屋久杉。紀元杉から車ですぐのところにある。
川上杉という名前は、林道新設の際にこの屋久杉を切り倒そうとなった際、川上さんという営林署職員の方がその道路計画を木を避けるように変更し、この木を伐採から守ったことに由来する。
