Geocache Description:

Deck of Cards Series

I do not save the log sheets from this series. If a log sheet is wet or missing, please feel free to replace it. Thanks.

There are a lot of great caches in Galena. Unfortunately there is limited room for more. But we need more caches for our visitors. My answer is to surround Galena with caches. Project GC tracks caches found by owner. I am working on finding 100 caches from each of 20 owners. I think it is only fair that I have 100 caches for them to find. I need about 50 more hides to end up with over 100 active caches. What is a number around 50? 52 - a Deck of Cards!

I will place caches 4 at a time. I will try to add interesting information about each. All the history in Galena is not in town. I hope you enjoy this series.

The 10s will take you to W Longhollow Road. About 60 years ago I traveled this road with my Grandmother. She lived in Guilford over by the 2s. Her parents lived with her sister in Elizabeth, IL. She would often visit them. This is the route she took. It was all gravel back then but taking this valley was quicker than Rte 20 on the ridgeline to the west.

The  10 of Clubs  is located at the intersection of W Longhollow Road and S Georgetown Road.

This is a strange intersection. Longhollow Road makes a sharp turn. Georgetown Road either starts or ends here depending on the direction you are headed. Actually it extends from the end of W Main St in Elizabeth. It started at the bridge across the Apple River. That was a cool old iron bridge. I have crossed it and have  pictures of it. The storm that took out the bridge at Brodrecht road also washed out the iron bridge. It will never be replaced. Dead end road signs are much cheaper.

From here Longhollow Road goes past the quarry and out to Rte 20. Notice anything wrong with the road signs? I had to look twice. Then while I was placing the cache the mechanic that works on my truck stopped to talk. He confirmed my thoughts, and then pointed out the top of the silo at his farm. He also pointed out that the creek is named Furnace Creek because there used to be a lead smelting furnace located here.

The hill to the west is where the tower used to be located along Rte 20. There is still a rest area there with year round rest rooms, and 3 geocaches.
