Geocache Description:

This Wherigo is located at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. There is a parking lot near Monks Mound and the Interpretive Center. If you would like to visit the Museum after you finished the Wherigo, the building is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Guided tours are available April, May, September and October on the weekends and daily June through August. Check the website for tour times.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves a prehistoric Indian city, which had a population of @20,000 people. The people built three types of mounds: Flat-top mounds for structures and homes of the leaders; Round-top mounds for burials of the elite; and Ridge-top mounds for marker mounds. The leaders were believed to be descendants of the Sun (Great Spirit). They built large open plazas for ceremonies, games, and markets. The center of the city was surrounded by a wooden wall. The nearly 2 mile wall enclosed Monks Mounds, 16 other mounds and the Grand Plaza. A sun calendar was used to mark the seasonal sun rises.
