Geocache Description:

Welcome to scenic Juneau, Alaska! Whether you’re a local or just visiting I hope you take the time to enjoy this multi-cache. I guarantee it’s the most entertaining way to see all the local downtown sights! You may ask yourself “Why would I want to spend several hours on a 14 stage multi?” The answer is simple: because it’s there. This cache will take you to several monuments, plaques and sculptures around Juneau. Each stage was chosen for its historical, cultural or governmental significance. This entire cache can be done while walking (and during the summer months this might even be faster than trying to drive). As you travel along your route you may be able to find some other caches, so keep an eye out! Take your time, enjoy the views and always remember; it’s a game!

While it may be possible for some locals to jump a few stages ahead; I hope you'll take the time to visit all of the stops!

Before starting this multi-cache please take note of the following:

1) All locations given for this cache are located on public property. Please follow all posted rules.

2) Juneau is a hilly city. Wear sensible shoes, bring water, and never exceed your physical limitations.

3) As always, remember that people live and work here in the city. Be respectful.

4) The difficulty rating is based on the amount of dedicated time this cache will take to complete. I walked this cache in its entirety from stage 1 to stage 14 and it took approximately an hour and forty minutes without any other stops.

5) You may find it beneficial to keep a pen and paper with you to help keep track of your waypoints.

6) All coordinates were taken with a Garmin E-Trex with precision ranging from 3-26 feet depending on the location. Even though some coordinates for a location may appear to be slightly off they will still put you in the immediate vicinity of whatever object you’re seeking.

7) Remember caching is an adventure! Have fun and enjoy your trip!

Stage One: This is the starting coordinates. Your adventure starts out in downtown Juneau near the cruise ship piers. At the coordinates you’ll find a sign that on the seaward side welcomes you to the city and on the city side bears a mural. Use the information on the mural to get to Stage 2.

Number of Whales = G

Number of Bears = H

Number of Fish jumping in the air off the Starboard Stern = J

Stage 2 is found at N 58 17.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (G+G+G+J); B = (2*J); C = (G+G+G+J)

D = (H); E = (2*G); F = (H)

Stage TwoLearn about a local hero at this stage. Take a moment to gather the information you need to get to the next stage! At the given coordinates you will find a plaque. Use this information to get to Stage 3.

"Born: 17 March GHJK"

Stage 3 is found at N 58 17.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (H); B = (J); C = (K-J)

D = (J); E = (G); F = (K)

Stage ThreeLearn about the history of one of Juneau’s local communities! Enjoy your history lesson as you proceed to get your next set of information! At the given coordinates you will find a plaque. Use this information to get to Stage 4.

“In GHJK aboard the cable vessel…”

Stage 4 is found at N 58 17.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (H); B = (J+3); C = (H-2)

D = (G+2); E = (K); F = (G+G)

Stage Four: This stage will help you learn about the reason Juneau became a thriving metropolis! After you learn your history lesson, do some simple math to find out how to get to Stage 5.

“…which opened in GFJK, ceased operating in LMNP…”

Stage 5 is found at N 58 17.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (J); B = (L+F); C = (M-K)

D = (F); E = (M); F = (K)

Stage Five: Time to get some cultural exposure and a bit of a history lesson. It’s hard to believe you’re already a third of the way done with your tour! Find the plaque at GZ and use it to locate the clues to solve for Stage 6.

"… in GHJK. It was funded by the Alaska State…"

Stage 6 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (H-G-K); B = (K); C = (J+G)

D = (J-G); E = (J); F = (3*G)

Stage Six: Arguably this could be called “the heart of the city.” Gather your information while trying to avoid the bustle of people! At this stage you will find some words on a 90-degree surface and some words on a relief on a 45-degree surface; use this to help calculate where to go for Stage 7.

Number of vowels on the 90-degree vertical surface – K

Number of vowels on the 45-degree surface - L

Number of words on the 90-degree vertical surface – M

Number of words on the 45-degree surface – N

(Check sum: K +L + M + N =29)

Stage 7 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (K-N); B = (N-7); C = (N-M)

D = (L-5); E = (M-3); F = (K-M)

Stage Seven: This is a relatively new installment here in the 49th state’s Capital City. Learn a bit about the history of our state before continuing on your adventure. Keep it up, you’re already more than halfway there! Use the plaque to find the coordinates for Stage 8.

“JKLM – NPQR”

Stage 8 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (R-L); B = (R*3); C = (P-J-M)

D = (M+R); E = (Q); F = (J+M+R)

Stage Eight: Located next to a quiet park you’ll find this sculpture after a short walk from the last stage. Use the information on the two plaques at coordinates to get to Stage 9.

“Dedicated September GH, JKLM”

“…came to Juneau in NPQR”

Stage 9 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (N); B = (Q-J); C = (H)

D = (L-M); E = (L); F = (G)

Stage Nine: This monument is located in one of my favorite parks in Juneau. Consider the magnitude of the signs you’re reading at the coordinates before using them to calculate your way to Stage 10.

"Dedicated July GH, JKLM"

Stage 10 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (G); B = (K); C = (G+H+J+K+L+G)

D = (F); E = (M); F = (C)

Stage Ten: Enjoy some shade here at Stage 10 as you read about an important public works project! At the given coordinates you will find a plaque. Use this information to get to Stage 11. If you are having trouble locating the plaque, make sure you’re on the right level!

"…from QRST – WXYZ was instrumental in the success of this project."

Stage 11 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (Q); B = (W-Q); C = (Z+S)

D = (X-W); E = (Y); F = (R-X)

Stage Eleven: A classic piece of Alaskan art awaits you at this stage. Take the time to enjoy this impressive monument before heading off for your next stop. Here you’ll use the information on the sign to calculate the coordinates to Stage 12.

“…constructed this building in QRST to serve as a…”

Stage 12 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 24.DEF'

A = (Q-T); B = (S+T); C = (S)

D = (R); E = (Q+T); F = (T+Q)

Stage Twelve: This is an oft-overlooked memorial. It’s a crime that so many people miss this place while visiting. Use the memorial itself to find the information to get to Stage 13.

Number of Large Stones – K

Number of Small Stones – L

Stage 13 is found at N 58 18.ABC', W 134 25.DEF'

A = (L-6); B = (K+K+K); C = (L+K+K)

D = (K+1); E = (A); F = (L-4)

Stage Thirteen: This is where it all began, and this is your final stop before you get to claim your smiley! Use the plaque at this stage to find out where to search for the cache container!

“August GH, JKLM”

The final cache can be found at N 58 17.ABC', W 134 25.DEF'

A = (G+K); B = (H-J); C = (A)

D = (H+M); E = (H+J); F = (C)

That’s it! You've reached the end of your tour of downtown Juneau. This multi is far more about the experience than it is about the final cache container so make sure to stop and enjoy the view as you sign the log! Please be stealthy as you grab the final. I hope you had a great time with this cache and remember: always take time to enjoy the journey!

In the spirit of sportsmanship and preserving this cache experience for the next finder, I ask that you not include any photos of the monuments, plaques or sculptures that you’ve seen along your journey.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEOSCOUT907 ON THE FTF
