Geocache Description:

This small chapel makes me fall in love with this place everytime I drive past. Take a moment to walk around the chapel and see the beauty that it has to offer. Please NO NIGHT CACHING!!!

Bethel Chapel is a simple one-storey wood cladding church, surrounded by a cemetery. It is an excellent example of a simple rural church with classical detailing.  Althought not regularly used since 1874, annual memorial services have been held the first Sunday in September since 1930. It is well preserved, with orginal interior wooden pews and a pulpit with a fence, pine floors and a wood stove, and has six 25-over-20 paned windows each with 45 pains of glass.

Original gravestones (about 73) have intricate designs, with surviving inscriptions commemorating pioneers. The first known burial within the cemetery is that of John Dawson (1764-1845) which predates the establishment of the church and cemetery. This grave should be to the west of the church. Thought the Bethel Chapel was closed in 1874, the cemetery continued to accept interments. In 1911, burial plots in the cemetery sold for $3 each. In 2008 an application was made to add 0.20 ha parcel of land from the property behind for the addtion of 360 graves. The cemetery remains to be open to burials at this time.
