Geocache Description:

Park at the garbage/recycle area (see waypoint) and then follow the signs for the Trans-Canada Trail. Bring your own writing stick, and a pair of tweezers may be required to remove log. NO TRADEABLES PLEASE.

The development of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883 sparked interest in the park's potential for recreational use, due to the proximity of the rail line to three main areas: (1) Brereton Lake; (2) Nora and Florence Lakes; (3) West Hawk and Falcon Lakes. My great grandparents, Tom and Clara Gilchrist, were some of the first cottagers on the south end of Brereton Lake in the early 1940's. Like my grandparents and parents after them, I spent my summers at "the lake" as a child. As an adult, my goal is to explore and enjoy every lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park; but Brereton still holds a special place in my heart.

Two independently published books were written recollecting the experiences of the first cottagers in the park. These books can be difficult to find as printing was limited, but I had luck finding a copy by searching online:

Cott, A. (1991). History and folklore of the whiteshell park north. Steinbach, MB: Derksen Printers Ltd. (ISBN: 1550990047)

Zimmerman, O. (1991). History and folklore of the whiteshell park south. Steinbach, MB: Derksen Printers Ltd. (ISBN: 1550990039)
