Geocache Description:

Galaxian was an arcade game developed and released by Namco in 1979 and licensed to by Midway for North America. A fixed-shooter game in which the player controlled a spaceship at the bottom of the screen, and shot enemies descending in various directions, it was designed to compete with Taito Corporation's successful earlier game Space Invaders.

The game was highly popular for Namco upon its release, and has been a focus of competitive gaming ever since. It spawned a successful sequel, Galaga, in 1981.

Galaxian on the Atari 2600
Galaxian was ported to the 2600 by Glenn Parker and Mark Ackerman of General Computer. Not wanting to reduce the game to have only six objects on a given line which was all the 2600 supported, Parker and Ackerman discovered that it was possible to push the hardware further than ever imagined and create eight objects on a given line, without flicker. This breakthrough allowed them to faithfully reproduce the arcade game and earned them U. S. Patent 4623147.
