Geocache Description:

A century ago there was probably a lot more to Golspie.  These days it is a locality with a few community buildings scattered down little travelled roads.

This area was originally called "Cutty Gutty" after the Aboriginal name for a creek that runs through the area.  It seems to have been named Golspie by the first postmaster of the area - George Murray.  George named his farm “Golspie” after his home township in Scotland.

George was born at Loch Shin near Lairg in 1818 to George Murray and Kate McDonald. The family relocated to Golspie (this locality's namesake) at the time of the infamous Highland clearances. On 30 August 1836, at the age of 18, George travelled to Australia as a convict on the Moffatt.  He had been convicted of shop breaking for which he received a sentence of 7 years transportation. In July 1841 George was given permission to marry Margaret Cameron (a free settler) in the presbyterian church in Goulburn.  They had 10 children and the last child, Ann is listed as having been born in Golspie.

Credit given to a terrific historical record of the Murray's running the Golspie Postal Service has been researched by Graham Hannaford and can be found at https://historylinksdornoch.wordpress.com/tag/golspie-new-south-wales/.
