Geocache Description:

From its source to its mouth, the Mersey River flows through varied topography, rich agricultural land and many interesting centres of population. The Meandering the Mersey (MTM) series will follow, as much as pracitcal, the course of the Mersey River with caches being placed at varying intervals. We trust you will enjoy the area.

River Road between the Devonport suburb of Ambleside and Bells Parade in Latrobe was a goat track back in the 1950s but was a pleasant walking route for many. Over the years the value of the route has been realised and there is now a good quality road joining the two locations which is well used as an alternative route between Latrobe and Devonport.

The Mersey River  on the southern side of River Road is very wide but generally shallow, with a navigable deeper section to enable small boats access to the northern end of Bells Parade. Consequently the area is one of strong contrasts. At high tide the expanse of water is quite wide and is often used by rowing crews for training. At low tide there are vast expanses of mud flats which team with tidal life. A small flock of pelicans have taken up residence in the area and they move around with the tide. Being tidal , the strong current flows make this part of the river good for fishing, especially from a small boat.
