Unkle Woody's Drive-In
1961 – 1976
Unkle Woody’s was one of the first combination Drive-In, Inside eating and Carry-out restaurants in the Washington area. The name was derived from both owners’ names - “UNK” from Ed Funk and “WOODY” from Tom Norwood. A complete menu was offered ranging from sandwiches to fountain services. Their hours were daily 10:30am-10pm; Friday & Saturday 10:30am-12 midnight; closed Tuesdays. This was a favorite “hang out” for the local high schoolers during it’s operation.
On the weekend of May 8, 1971, the restaurant dropped their prices over the entire menu to “10 year ago prices” in celebration of their 10 year anniversary - whereas, their “Unkle Woody’s Special” (consisting of the “Big Deal Hamburger”, Cream Slaw and Golden French Fries) was $0.90 instead of $1.30! (See pics for other price reductions). While I was unable to find when the restaurant actually closed, I believe it closed when Ed Funk retired in 1976.
