El Baluarte fue construido hacia la década de 1630 mientras era gobernador Francisco de Murga, continuando hacia el sur la obra comenzada por Cristóbal de Roda tres décadas antes. Inicialmente llamado baluarte de los Cestones por los grandes cestos empleados en la construcción de sus cimientos, cambió su nombre por el del santo jesuita debido a la cercanía del colegio de la Compañía.

La disputa con los religiosos y los daños sufridos durante el asedio de De Pointis, hicieron necesaria su reconstrucción y la modificación de su traza. Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor fue el encargado entre 1720 y 1730, de proporcionarle sus características actuales, una irregular planta con garitón barroco, una rampa de acceso y un amplio solado.

The Bulwark of San Francisco Javier

It was constructed around the decade of 1630 while Francisco de Murga was governor, extending to the south the work begun by Cristóbal de Roda three decades earlier. Initially called the Bulwark of the Baskets because of the large baskets used in the construction of its foundations, its name was changed to that of the Jesuit saint’s because of the proximity to the Jesuit school.

The dispute with the members of the order and the damage suffered during the siege by De Pointis, made its reconstruction necessary as well as a modification in its plan. Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor was in charge, between 1720 and 1730, of giving it its current characteristics, an irregular site with a baroque sentry-box, an access ramp and an ample base.
