Originally, whisky was divided into Highland and Lowland based on different tax rules.
Highlands whisky is Scottish whisky from Highlands in Scotland. The border between Highlands and Lowlands is along an imaginary line between Dundee and Greenock. In terms of the number of producers, Highlands is the undisputed whisky manufacturing center. The region also includes Speyside, whisky produced along the River Spey. Some argue that Highlands and Speyside are actually two completely separate regions because the differences in, for example, taste are quite large.
Highlands
Highlands, which is Scotland's largest whisky region, produces powerful whiskys with smoky flavors. It's otherwise hard to say anything about whisky from Highlands because the different brands differ quite a bit. The prefix Glen is commonly found in whiskys from the highlands and means valley.
Lowland whisky is Scottish whisky from Lowlands in Scotland. Lowland is a fairly flat region with no higher mountains and the border up to Highlands is at the height of the city of Dundee. To the south, the border goes to England. Lowlands whisky usually has a smoother taste and not as smoky as in many other parts of Scotland. However, the taste may be a little fiery.
Both Highlands whisky and Lowlands whisky are found as single malt and blended.
Single malt is one distillation
Blended are several different distillations that are mixed to the desired taste.

Höglandswhisky är skotsk whisky från höglandet i Skottland. Gränsen mellan högland och lågland går längs en imaginär linje mellan Dundee och Greenock. Sett till mängden producenter är höglandet det odiskutabla centrumet för whiskytillverkning. I regionen ingår också Speyside, whisky som produceras invid floden Spey. En del hävdar att höglands och Speyside egentligen är två helt separata regioner eftersom skillnaderna i till exempel smak är ganska stora.
Högland
Höglandet, som till ytan är Skottlands största whiskyregion, producerar kraftiga whiskysorter med rökig smak. Det är annars svårt att säga något generellt om whisky från höglandet eftersom de olika märkena skiljer sig åt ganska mycket. Prefixet Glen är vanligt förekommande i whiskysorter från högländerna och betyder dalgång.
Låglandswhisky är skotsk whisky från låglandet i Skottland. Låglandet är en tämligen platt region utan några högre berg och gränsen upp mot höglandet går i höjd med staden Dundee. I söder går gränsen mot England. Whisky från låglandet har oftast en mjukare smak och inte så rökig som i många andra delar av Skottland. Smaken kan dock vara lite eldig.
Både höglandswhisky och låglandswisky finns som single malt och blended.
