London Eye is a ferris wheel in London, which was built to celebrate the turn of the millennium (1999-2000). It is located on the south side of the Thames. At the top you will be 170 meters above the ground and have about 40 kilometers of views in all directions. London Eye was opened on December 31, 1999 at 8:00 pm, but could not be put into operation for the public until March 2000 due to technical problems.
The wheel is constructed in the same way as a bicycle wheel with spokes. With several wires deployed in the wheel instead of rigid beams, the construction became much easier and cheaper. Nevertheless, it consists of 1 700 tons of steel.
At full capacity the wheel draws around 190 kilowatts. The wheel has 32 gondolas, each taking 25 passengers. In a day it can take up to 15,000 passengers. It takes about 30 minutes to ride a full turn.
