Infantry. "He fought at the battle of Gettysburg July 1, 1863 - July 3, 1863 where he was wounded in the knee and taken prisoner. He was released because of his wounded knee and was allowed to come home from the war. While in the Confederate Army he became so hungry he ate the bark of trees. Of the one hundred men who left with him from Pitt County only three returned alive."   According to The Chronicles of Pitt County, North Carolina, p. 197, "In a deed dated April 30, 1870, (John Stancill William Brown's father, John Reddin Brown) gave land to the Church of Christ. This enabled the church to move its meeting place from Brown's School House located on the John Brown farm to its present location. This moving took place June 5, 1870, and the church was named Mount Pleasant."   * * *   According to North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865, A Roster, compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr., v. 13, 53rd-56th Regiments, Raleigh, North Carolina, Division of Archives and History, 1993, p. 477:   BROWN, JOHN STANCILL WILLIAM, Private   Born in Greene County on September 11, 1839. Resided in Pitt County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Pitt County at age 22, May 5, 1862, for the war. Reported absent sick with leave in June, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded in the left knee at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. Captured on or about the same time. Hospitalized at Gettysburg. Transferred to hospital at Davids Island and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received on September 8, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded in the thigh at Wilderness, Virginia, May 5, 1864. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1864. Reported present in September-October, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.   Company E was raised primarily in Pitt County in March, April and May of 1862. It was mustered into state service at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, on May 30, 1862, and assigned to the 55th Regiment North Carolina Troops.   * * *   The farm of John S. W. Brown is among just 1,300 of the 58,000 farms in North Carolina that are part of the North Carolina Century Farm program. Admininstered by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Century Farm program recognizes those farms that have been in continuous ownership by a family for 100 years or more.   * * *   The Daily Reflector, Greenville, North Carolina, Tuesday, November 8, 1904, p. 1:   Dropped Dead.   Mr. John Brown, who lived near Mt. Pleasant, about five miles from Greenville, dropped dead in his field Monday. Mr. Brown was out in the field with some hands housing his potatoe crop when he fell, and was dead when the others reached him. He was about 60 years old and leaves a wife, six daughters, and two sons.   * * *   The Daily Reflector, Greenville, North Carolina, Tuesday, November 8, 1904, p. 1:   Ayden Items.   Mrs. William Worthington, of our town, received news yesterday that her father, Mr. John Brown, had fallen dead in the field a short distance from Greenville on the other side of the river.
