This is a very pretty spot where you can take a seat and enjoy the scenic view offered by both the Grantham Canal and the very pretty avenue with columns of Lombardy Poplars down each side.
The poplars commemorate the men of the Sherwood Foresters killed on the Somme battlefield in 1916. When you get to the co-ordinates, take the time to read the extensive plaque which also lists the casualties, there are a lot of names here.
So why 'Tank'? It was on the Somme where the tank first appeared and reference is made to this on the plaque. The name 'tank' was a cover story for the new contraption which was top secret. The shipment to France was labelled up as water 'tanks'. By all accounts the 'tank' was a great surprise to the Germans, many of whom ran in terror before they developed tactics to counter the threat. The veil of secrecy was lifted the moment 'His Majesty's Land Ships' appeared on the battlefield, yet the term 'tank' lives on to the present day.
