Geocache Description:

Turning to the Cold War this time: If you want the full story, try here: (visit link)

The abridged version concerns the Soviet submarine K129 which basically imploded and sank in 1968. The US navy happened to deduce what had happened and most importantly 'where'. Unbeknown to the Soviets, they hatched a plan to recover the lost sub and with it would come code books and Soviet submarine secrets. The sub was in such deep water that a special ship had to be built to do the job. Sure enough, such a ship was constructed specifically for the task and named the Hughes Glomar Explorer. The cover story was that it was a drilling and exploration ship designed to look for manganese nodules on the sea bed. The story was reinforced by Howard Hughes himself and the ship went off to find its 'treasure' without arousing suspicion.

The final result was that only part of the sub was recovered as it proved to be very fragile and broke up as it was grasped and lifted. The remains of 6 Soviet crew were recovered and subsequently given a formal burial at sea. The suggestion was that little of value was found as the sub was already out of date when it sank and not much of it came to the surface.

The cache pays homage to this recovery effort. A tool is available in the hollow pole on the platform to start the recovery process but you’ll need to snatch it by hand. Please replace (scuttle!) where found, i.e. 1 foot in front of the platform out of plain sight. The log sits behind two seals, check both are tight. The main capsule can be removed but check it's orientation to ensure it doesn't slip out.
