Designed for families, this geocache introduces old-fashioned "geodetic survey markers" and compass work. Coordinates for both Stage1 & 2 are provided for the adults in your group, but why not challenge your kids to see if they can find Stage 2, just using a compass? Information about geodetic markers and basic instructions on how to use a compass are provided. Kids and grown-ups take a bearing, then walk a short distance to find a second cache with eco-charms (one per child). Bring your own compass or use the one inside the cache (but please return it to the cache for the next family).
Peninsula State Park staff worked with NOAA's Regional Advisor after a park marker was damaged. The marker was "destroyed" and moved to it's present site. Peninsula visitors will see the name "Sven" on the marker. Sven Amundson was a Great Lakes sailor who retired to live on the scenic bluff that now bears his name.
Note: Please do not leave ANY "treasures" in either Stage 1 0rt 2 geocaches; all items will be discarded. Because of the bluffs in Peninsula State Park, GPS units do not always function accurately. Wisconsin DNR staff at Peninsula State Park created, placed, and are maintaining this geocache with approval of the Park Superintendent. The Geocache Notification Form was submitted and approved by the Superintendent.
