Geocache Description:

This i is a redo of a cache with a similar (yet different) name that I archived in August  2017.  This location is much better.  It's the twentieth cache in my local bus route series and the fifth one in Nassau County.  The cache is a magnetic key box.

There is no parking on the bridge.  There is plenty of parking nearby.

After finding the cache, take a stroll along the 9-11 Memorial Bridge for a scenic view of the Saddle Rock Grist Mill and Little Neck Bay beyond.

The mighty n57 is a rush hour only loop service bus through the villages of Great Neck, Kings Point and Saddle Rock.  It runs clockwise during the morning rush and counter clockwise on certain streets during the afternoon rush hours.  It starts and ends at the Great Neck LIRR station.

The line was started by the Universal Autobus Company that had two routes in Great Neck.  The company 'officially' began in 1921 but there is evidence that their first two buses were made of half trolley car bodies mounted on 2-cylinder Autocar frames.  These date back to 1900 and may have been in service as early as then. In 1960, Universal Autobus became a part of the Schenck Transportation family and  later part of the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority in 1973.  Today it is run by Nassau County through their NICE system.  The line was supposed to be discontinued on April 9, 2017 due to low usage but an influx of funds became available to save the route at least for now.  All Nassau County buses use a lower case 'n' on their destination signs. The line is assigned to the Mitchell Field depot.

The 9-11 Memorial Bridge.

Following the attack upon the United States of America on September 11, 2001, the “Saddle Rock Bridge”, from which there is a view of the New York City skyline, became a place of vigil and memorial. Many people came to the bridge on that day and on the days that followed as the tragedy unfolded. The community watched as the World Trade Center Twin Towers disappeared from the skyline, and family members, friends, and neighbors placed candles, messages, and drawings of hope and remembrance on both sides of the entire span of the bridge.

In addition to the view of the skyline,) there is a view of the Saddle Rock Grist Mill built circa 1700. The bridge is within the Village but is owned and maintained by Nassau County. Together, the view from the bridge spans the history of the United States of America.
On December 27, 2001 the Village of Saddle Rock and Nassau County rededicated the bridge as the “9-11 Memorial Bridge”. The bridge lights up in red, white and blue at night.
