Guy Fawkes of the Gunpowder Plot fame was born and raised in York. This alone is of course not a great thing, but without him we wouldn't celebrate his downfall on Bonfire Night!
The aim was to assassinate James I and restore a catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters leased an undercroft under the House of Lords and Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder they stockpiled there. However, on receiving an anonymous tip-off, the authorities questioned and tortured Guy Fawkes and he eventually confessed. One minute before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes fell (or jumped) from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck.
Guy Fawkes' effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire commonly accompanied by a fireworks display.
