Geocache Description:

AN T-SUILEAG BURN - POTHOLES

POTHOLES are funnel-shaped holes that were eroded away in bedrock by circular flowing turbulent water streams. This erosion process takes place everywhere in nature, where water flows in torrents, gorges or canyons.

Rock fragments, small stones and sand carried along by the stream wash out these cavities further. Emerging swirls facilitate the erosion process. The presence of a relatively weak bedrock is convenient.

The bedrock of AN T-SUILEAG BURN is Moine schist, which was created by metamorphism of a billion years old sedimentary sandstone at elevated temperatures and pressures.

The process of pothole formation is called evorsion. This is an artificial word from erosion and vortex, a region in a fluid in which the flow revolves around an axis line.

Depending on the water level you can discover a lot of potholes at the given coordinates. To log this EarthCache as FOUND IT you have to answer the following questions:

1) Which factors facilitate the genesis of potholes?

2) Estimate the size (diameter and depth) oft the biggest pothole you found here!

3) What do you think, will the potholes become bigger or smaller in the future? Why?

4) Please add an on-site photo of you or a personal item as a proof of visit to your log! This is a logging requirement according to the EarthCache Guidelines from June 10th, 2019!

Send me your answers by mail or Message Center, but not in your log. After that you can directly log this EarthCache as FOUND IT! I will contact you if there are any problems. Logs without answering these questions will be deleted.

Have fun with this little geological excursion!
