In 1844 – 1847, a brick customs building, now called the Tauragė Castle, was built in Tauragė. The entire architectural ensemble of the castle displays romantic features of a Renaissance-style castle. In 1844, a staged customs building project was prepared, and in 1847, a two-story brick building to contain the persons detained by customs was constructed. In 1852, the building was fenced by a brick wall, and a bathhouse with outbuildings were built and a well was dug. In 1866, the entire construction was rebuilt into the castle prison, and the corner towers with firing holes were built additionally. The entire architectural construction was provided with full romantic nature of a Renaissance-style castle. At this time, the castle gained the general looks and layout of the modern days. Only after the war, in 1971 and in 1986, two new buildings were built in the yard of the castle.
