August 28 1990 at 6:15pm in the evening, Allegany State Park was struck by a tornado, considered by many as one of the most violent of meteorological disturbances. Although tornadoes have touched down in the park in the past, this particular storm hit the heart of the Quaker Run Area and caused considerable damage to several forested areas.
The 1990 tornado first touched down on Mt. Tuscarora, just west of the Quaker toll booth. From there, the storm traveled across Quaker Lake, striking the Cain Hollow Campground (damaging 3 campers). The tornado then traveled approximately 10 miles through the southwest portion of the park, touching ground about 9 times before moving into Pennsylvania. Damage to the park was estimated as minimal until a 250 acre "blowdown" was discovered on Mt. Onondaga years later.
Now over a decade later the area has largely recovered but evidence of the tornado can still be seen.
