Welcome to the Wall Doxey State Park, and neighboring Holly Springs National Forest. This area offers many amenities and outdoor recreation opportunities including: camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, disk golf, and watersports. The beautiful forests in this area are covered with mixed pine hardwood forests. Here, you could expect to find oak, beech, hickory, river birch, elm, willow, and maple trees intermixed with southern yellow pine species. These hardwood trees provide beautiful fall foliage viewing opportunities; however, some of these trees are being threatened by invasive exotic forest insect pests.
One particularly nasty invasive is the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). These beetles can attack and kill many hardwood trees here in the United States, including many from the list provided above. Not only are these beetles bad for the aesthetics of our forests, they could also have big impacts on the forest industry. Landowners could lose valuable timber, and because maples are a favorite food source, maple syrup production could be at risk. Another favored host is the river birch, which you can't miss when you find this cache.
The Asian longhorned beetle was first detected near a New York harbor in the 1990's, and since then have begun to spread southward across the eastern United States. They are currently only in the Northeast from Illinois to New Jersey, and are not yet found in Mississippi. However, people who enjoy the outdoors can unwittingly aid their ability to spread through the movement of infested firewood, as the larvae and pupae remain unnoticed deep within the wood.
