A regular size cache hidden along the Lake Trail which starts near the Route 82 entrance. You are looking for a metal ammo box container hidden at ground level.
This cache is located on the Lake Trail which starts near the eastern enterance of the park and circles the lake. The entire trail around the lake is nearly 5 miles long. A kiosk located at a small parking area has a trail map. The Lake Trail (white) starts just across the road. Keep right at the first junction for the white blazed Lake Trail. You can also hike up the fitness trail to the end and circle down to the Lake Trail. Cross the wooden bridge and you will see a large tree. The tree is hollow at the base.
A tree hollow or tree hole is a semi-enclosed cavity which has naturally formed in the trunk or branch of a tree. They are found mainly in old trees. Hollows form in many species of trees, and act as a resource or habitat for a number of animals.
Hollows may form as the result of physiological stress from natural forces causing the excavating and exposure of heartwood. Forces including wind, fire, heat, lightning, rain, attack from insects (such as ants or beetles), bacteria, or fungi. Also, trees may self-prune, dropping lower branches as they reach maturity, exposing the area where the branch was attached. Many animals further develop the hollows using instruments such as their beak, teeth or claws.
Lake Taghkanic SP charges a $8 vehicle entrance fee. This fee is collected 5/26-6/24 weekends and holidays, and 6/25-9/3 daily.
