In November 1904, Miss Alice Roosevelt, daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was visiting the Mills family and Staatburgh for the weekend – something she often did as she was friends with the Millses’ twin daughters Gladys and Beatrice. Her father had been elected President that Tuesday. In his honor, Miss Roosevelt was serenaded by the Staatsburg Band during her stay.
Alice Roosevelt was known for being a bit of a live wire – she smoked cigarettes on the roof of the White House and owned a pet snake named Emily Spinach. She often said, “If you can’t say something good about someone, sit right here by me.” She was a starkly different woman from Ruth Livingston Mills who was known for her decorum, grace, and conservatism.
