Star Trek first aired over 50 years ago. Created by Gene Roddenberry in 1964, the franchise has spawned numerous television series, films, comics, novels, games, and fan fiction...and now there's a Trek-themed GeoArt series in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
Starfleet crew members were normally referred to by their surnames, or their only names in some cases; Data and Spock are two notable examples. While Spock did have a last name, Vulcan family names were nearly unpronounceable by Humans and none were established in Star Trek canon.
