Community Art Projects at the Straz Center

Why Sit When You Can Play: The Urban Conga Musical Bench. A working instrument that doubles as one of the best seats on the Riverwalk — stop by, sit and play! Each bar has its own note, played with a mallet attached to the bench with a steel cord. The bars and notes are based on a color code system to help the users learn how to play music.

String Theory Fin Harp: A sonic sculpture created by Luke Rothschild, designed to harness 14 brass wires that extend about 200 feet from a spot on the Riverwalk to the roof of the Straz Center. More than 3,000 feet of musical brass wire adorns the performing arts center, and literally transforms the center into a gigantic interactive musical instrument.

Art on the Walk: In 2015, the Straz Center launched a series of community art projects engaging people in the creative process and highlighting the extraordinary talents of local and international visual artists. Because of the overwhelming response, the Straz Center created Art on the Walk, an ongoing community art project permanently exhibited on the Riverwalk.

The Cube: Located in front of the Jaeb Theater. This work, a giant, solid-white steel box the size of a storage container is updated regularly with paintings that depict current and up-coming shows.
