Geocache Description:

OK, so who was Santa Margarita? Google and Wikipedia provide some clues.

Margaret, known as Margaret of Antioch in the West, and as Saint Marina the Great Martyr (Greek: Ἁγία Μαρίνα) in the East, is celebrated as a saint on July 20 in the Western Rite Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches, on July 17 (Julian calendar) by the Eastern-Rite Orthodox Church and on Epip 23 and Hathor 23 in the Coptic Churchs.

Said to have been martyred in 304, she was declared apocryphal by Pope Gelasius I in 494, but devotion to her revived in the West with the Crusades. Olybrius, Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East, asked to marry her, but with the demand that she renounce Christianity. Upon her refusal, she was cruelly tortured, during which various miraculous incidents occurred. One of these involved being swallowed by Satan in the shape of a dragon, from which she escaped alive when the cross she carried irritated the dragon's innards.

Hmm. Maybe a different Margarita.

Saint Margaret of Cortona, T.O.S.F., (1247 – 22 February 1297) was an Italian penitent of the Third Order of St. Francis ("T.O.S.F."). She was born in Laviano, near Perugia, and died in Cortona. She was canonized in 1728. She is the patron saint of the falsely accused, hoboes, homeless, insane, orphaned, mentally ill, midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, stepchildren, and tramps.

I like this one better, especially thinking Maria Freitas may have had a say in the naming of the park. Santa Margarita was the name of one of the Mexican land grants to Timothy Murphy in1844 (the others were Las Gallinas and San Pedro), later bought by Manuel T. Freitas in 1898.

Anyway, I like to come here and try a little meditation after some morning meetings. The park features a kiddie play area, some swings, a picnic area and decrepit tennis and basketball courts. Amazingly, there always seem to be new nets on the hoops.

I placed the cache up on the surrounding hill, being careful not to encroach on the radius limits of some other nearby caches, while also trying to go high enough to afford a small view. Because of the poison oak in the vicinity, I had to avoid some prime cache-hiding spots. It's a largish small with plenty of room for a trinket or two. I left a pen which may or may not write. Please screw the lid back on firmly!

Start at the bridge and follow the well-worn human/deer trails.
