L’Alta Valsessera si colloca in un’area geologicamente complessa per la presenza dell’importante faglia detta Linea Insubrica (o Linea del Canavese). La faglia,che rappresenta il punto di contatto tra le due placche continentali africana ed europea, attraversa diagonalmente la valle dal Bocchetto Sessera al Bocchetto della Boscarola. A sud-est di tale faglia si trovano rocce molto antiche di tipo magmatico intrusivo a composizione basica, mentre a nord-ovest predominano le rocce metamorfiche scistose. All’interno di questi sistemi rocciosi si sono inseriti più tardi corpi magmatici che hanno dato origine alle rocce sienitiche del plutone della Valle Cervo e a quelle vulcaniche che affiorano lungo la faglia stessa.
Più recentemente la storia geologica della valle è stata segnata dalla presenza dei ghiacciai, che ne hanno occupato la parte più alta, e dai corsi d’acqua, il Sessera e i suoi affluenti, che hanno inciso profondamente il tratto inferiore.
La Linea Insubrica, ben riconoscibile dalle immagini satellitari, rappresenta una geosutura, ossia l'espressione sulla superficie terrestre dello scontro, inquadrato nel modello della tettonica a zolle, fra la placca europea e quella africana segnando quindi il confine tra la placca eurasiatica e la placca adriatica.
Durante il Giurassico l'oceano tetideo, allungato in direzione est-ovest, separava la placca africana da quella europea. Lo spostamento della placca africana verso nord, e quindi verso la placca europea, iniziato nel Cretaceo, originò la progressiva chiusura della Tetide, la subduzione del suo fondale oceanico e quindi la collisione delle croste continentali delle due grandi zolle. I sedimenti depositati sul margine continentale europeo furono coinvolti nella compressione, generando un prisma di accrezione formato da rocce deformate e metamorfiche con intrusioni di batoliti granitici derivanti dalla fusione delle parti crostali in subduzione.

Valsessera is located in a geologically complex area due to the presence of the important fault known as the Insubric Line (or Linea del Canavese). The fault, which represents the point of contact between the two African and European continental plates, diagonally crosses the valley from the Bocchetto Sessera to the Bocchetto della Boscarola. To the south-east of this fault are very ancient intrusive magmatic rocks with a basic composition, while to the north-west the schistose metamorphic rocks predominate. Within these rocky systems later magmatic bodies were inserted which gave rise to the Sienitic rocks of the Valle Cervo pluton and to the volcanic ones that emerge along the fault itself.
More recently, the geological history of the valley was marked by the presence of the glaciers, which occupied the highest part of it, and by the watercourses, the Sessera and its tributaries, which deeply affected the lower section.
The Insubric Line, well recognizable from satellite images, represents a geo-suture, that is the expression on the terrestrial surface of the contact between the European and African plates, thus marking the border between the Eurasian plate and the Adriatic plate.
During the Jurassic the Tethys ocean, stretched in an east-west direction, separated the African plate from the European one. The movement of the African plate to the north, and then to the European plate, started in the Cretaceous, originated the progressive closing of the Tethys, the subduction of its ocean floor and therefore the collision of the continental crusts of the two large clods. The sediments deposited on the European continental edge were involved in compression, generating an acceleration prism formed by deformed rocks and then metamorphosed with intrusions of granitic batoliths resulting from the fusion of the subduction crustal parts.

2) descrivi la forma dei margini delle faglia delimitata a destra e sinistra dalle montagne del Bocchetto della Boscarola di fronte (il pannello ti aiuterà a individuarlo);
3) indica qual è la direzione della Linea Insibrica lungo la Valsessera (esattamente come indicato nel pennello);
4) indica il nome e la descrizione della roccia che viene descritta nella nota 10 del pannello;
5) le fotografie sono opzionali, ma gradite.

2) describe the shape of the edges of the mountains at right and left of the pass that reveals the fault line at the Bocchetto della Boscarola (panel will help you to find the Bocchetto della Boscarola pass in front of you);
3) indicate the direction of the Insubric line along the Valsessera (exactly as reported in the panel);
4) indicate name and description of the rock in the note 10 of the panel;
5) pictures are optional, but welcome.
