Geocache Description:

The Great Northern, Spokane Portland & Seattle, Union Pacific, and Milwaukee Road railroad lines once passed through the heart of Spokane at the site now known as Riverfront Park. In order to make way for Expo in 1974, the downtown tracks needed to be removed. The tracks were all to be combined onto the former Northern Pacific line, which posed a problem. All four rail lines ran along the opposite side of Latah Creek from the Northern Pacific line. Thus, a new bridge was built over Latah Creek to connect to the Northern Pacific Railroad line.

In 1972, the railroads built the new bridge over Latah Creek. Looking to the Northwest you can see the high bridge. The bridge is 3,950 feet long, and its piers reach up to 175 feet from the Latah Creek canyon floor. It is constructed of six steel 160-feet spans supported by concrete piers. The western end of the bridge splits to form a wye, or triangular junction of railroads, to connect to the original mainlines.

In the canyon below this park, you can see the BNSF tracks which were once the Northern Pacific tracks. Across the canyon, you can see another BNSF track that carried the former railroads to the west.
