The spot you find yourself is symbolic. The train we are talking about had tracks right here. Today at this spot you can't go any further except on your own two feet and that is the symbol - all good things come to an end. Here is the story.

The Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad competed against and merged with the big dogs of the era. Some say it began in 1890 and ran East to Coeur d'Alene and beyond and South to Moscow and beyond. It was also known as an "interurban"system meaning electric self propelled (opposed to steam) connecting our cities and towns.

Henry Ford and his assembly line technique that produced affordable cars spelled the doom for the Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad and every other line like it throughout the United States. The final run to Moscow was 1939 and the final run to Coeur d'Alene was 1940. 1985 saw the last pieces of the line scrapped.

Thank you to the men and women of the S.I.E.R.R for shaping what Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Liberty Lake to what they are today.

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit STAR Challenge and get started today.
to find the challenge rules, a printable STAR Passport and map view of qualifying caches.

The Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge is sponsored by Cache Advance, and by donation from local cachers. We hope you enjoy!
