Nicholas Ball, an adventurer and trapper, was one of the first settlers in the Knoxville region. After fighting in the American Revolution, he embarked on a mission west across he Appalachians and into the Tennessee Valley. He established a camp that was used by people headed west through our region in the modern day Ball Camp area along Plum Creek (about three miles northwest of here). Ball was killed in an attack by Native Americans on December 23, 1793 when he was shot seven times before being fatally wounded. Ball Camp is said to be one of Knox County’s oldest communities and still bears his name. This historical marker stands in rememberence of his historic settlement.
